take a break from the city and relax
Driving to Matarangi offers some spectacular New Zealand landscape, from the north Waikato farmland beneath the bush clad Bombay Hills to the stunningly scenic road from Thames to Coromandel beside the Firth of Thames.
During the summer, the hills on this coast blaze with flowering pohutakawa and the size and shapes of these ancient trees make for a memorable experience.

from Auckland to Thames
From Auckland take the southern motorway south. From the airport head south to the southern motorway and Hamilton (not Auckland) This is well signposted out of the airport, but the route to the southern motorway is not direct. Travelling south on the Auckland Motorway, turn left at the bottom of the Bombay Hills onto SH2, (signposted to Tauranga and Thames).
After approximately 25 kilometres take SH25 on the left to Thames/Coromandel. Follow signs to Thames, crossing a single lane wooden bridge at Kopu. Turn left at Kopu. Thames is a few kilometres up this road.

from Thames to Matarangi
From Thames, continue up the beautiful coastline SH25 through Thornton Bay, TePuru, Waiomu, Tapu and Te Mata. Take the right hand turn (still SH25) signposted: Whitianga, Whangapoua, Matarangi & Kuaotunu. This is just before you reach Coromandel Town. (Do not take the 309 road to Whitianga!)
Stunning views of the eastern Coromandel await you at the top of the hill. Drive past the first left-hand turn (to Whangapoua), going on about 8kms until the Matarangi signs. Matarangi Manor is located in "The Pines" right at the end of Matarangi Drive, (817-past the golf club) which is the main Road leading in to Matarangi.
